Myth- vegetable chips are healthier than potato chips. False. Fried veggie chips are in fact just as unhealthy as the average potato chip. Regardless of the nutrients that the raw food may contain, once it’s been cooked away and deep fried in oil, its all got the same levels of fat and carbs.
Some veggie chips like sweet potato or radish and spinach actually contain more sodium than potato kettle chips in order to compensate for flavor. The truth is, any type of fried chip, no matter what the vegetable may be, is not the healthiest snack choice. Many vegetable chip options even include corn as a primary ingredient, which means they are actually a blend of corn tortilla chips and other veggies.
So what’s a healthier alternative snack? If chips are your go to comfort snack, try popcorn instead! Not the store bought microwave kind, the self-made popped on the stove in olive oil kind. This way you can regulate what ingredients go into your snack to avoid harmful synthetic preservatives. Popcorn is also a low calorie snack that makes you feel full, and so you are likely to eat lower volumes as well.
