What are they?
We seem to consistently hear the word antioxidant being thrown around nowadays, usually championed by some companies marketing supplements. However, the role of antioxidants and how they can be beneficial to the body is still unknown to many. So really, what are antioxidants? Are they all the same? And why are they important to our health?
Let’s start off with what antioxidants do. Antioxidants help rid the body of free radicals. These are molecules that have generally lost an electron and begin a chain reaction when attempting to recover their lost electrons - this can ultimately disrupt living cells. What does this mean? To use the immune system as an example, when there’s an excess of free radicals, the immune system is suppressed and its reaction time becomes slower. Antioxidants can be used by the immune system to help fight against free radicals to reduce response time and protect the body from illness.
Now, let’s talk origins and types of antioxidants. All antioxidants are not the same and certain types can be more powerful than others depending on their natural origin. Basically, although you may consume a higher volume of antioxidants like, let’s say, ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) from oranges - a nutrient like Lycopene (usually found in red fruits like watermelon) would be far more effective . While society has become vitamin C and citrus obsessed, research actually shows that Lycopene is of a much higher benefit to your body in combating free radicals than ascorbic acid in the same concentration.
At Simo Juice we research how your body operates and strive to find the nutrients that will provide optimal results by effectively supplementing your body. The Immune Boost Melon Berry is packed with fruits that have high antioxidant properties such as Watermelon (as it contains Lycopene, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin E), Guava (contains 4x the concentration of Vitamin C than in oranges) and many more ingredients tailored to help you support immune system function by reducing risk of changes caused by free radicals. The Immune Boost will be available for pre-ordering this August – subscribe to our newsletter and we’ll let you know as soon as you can start ordering!
